Union Square flowers. Oh, how I miss flowers right now (currently 10 degrees, "feels like -8").
I got together with some friends last night & had a great discussion on what we learned in 2008. I came up with my for-public-distribution personal (but not too personal) top 10.
- Assume good will. You will be a much happier person & have better relationships
- If you want friends, work to get them. Sitting around & waiting for people to talk to you or invite you to do things will not have great results. Friends are worth the time, effort & potential initial discomfort in obtaining them.
- Getting offended is a total waste of time.
- Humans are always loved – at the very least, by Him who loved us most. That alone makes all the difference.
- Allowing oneself to take cabs more often greatly improves overall quality of life (some things are just worth the splurge).
- Small & simple things have the potential to produce massive amounts of change - mend a quarrel. Seek out a forgotten friend. Dismiss suspicion and replace it with trust. Write a letter. Give a soft answer. Encourage youth. Manifest your loyalty in word and deed. Keep a promise. Forgo a grudge. Forgive an enemy. Apologize. Try to understand. Examine your demands on others. Think first of someone else. Be kind. Be gentle. Laugh a little more. Express your gratitude. Welcome a stranger. Gladden the heart of a child. Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth. Speak your love and then speak it again. (Howard W. Hunter)
- Norma’s really is the best brunch in Manhattan.
- Worry is not productive. Be prepared, & move forward with faith & confidence.
People universally tend to think that happiness is a stroke of luck or something that will maybe descend upon you like fine weather. That's not how happiness works. Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it. (Elizabeth Gilbert)
Rainy days in New York City are far more enjoyable with a great pair of rain boots.

I love the quote on happiness.
i loved this, thanks for posting your thoughts.
I think we should make these into a little sign to hang on our walls! Great thoughts.
i am a big fan of 8 & 10 today.
Rainy days are much more enjoyable with rain boots/wellies.
I like this list.
i really like your list. i might make number 2 my january mantra.
Thanks for sharing! I particularly like #2. I must work on that one because friends really are THAT great.
I also love numbers 6 and 9... we must think alike ;)
There can be nothing better than number 6. It seems to encompass the other 9. Loved this entire thing.
i like your list. #2 is a good one, and #10 :) i should have gone on thurs night.
Love the list and I totally agree that despite the weather, a cute pair of rain boots will always put a smile on your face.
That was so much fun. I think we officially have a new end of year tradition.
PS This is Ruth. :)
I love that quote on happiness. What a good thing to really spend time reflecting/pondering on the lessons learned in a year.
