I don't especially love to be a sheep (i.e. I tend to be a bit wary of mass trends which are often full of hype, etc.), but I'm a total hypocrite & I caved. I'm glad. Not only did I read all of the Twilight books last year (I'm still sort of embarrassed to admit this), but I read the first Harry Potter book on the plane to Portland this past week (it's a long flight). I realize I'm a few years late on this trend - & I'm quite poor at keeping up with any others, obviously - but whatever. It was entertaining, very smartly written & my brain needed something relatively light & fluffy. I can see why the young people love them. I might read the rest, but in the meantime I'm a little behind on the other books on my shelf & have some catching up to do.

You remember Debbie Harrison...(.English )Teacher of the year at Whitworth...she LOVED the Harry Potter books and felt they were wonderfully well written. Maybe I'll take the leap myself one day.
HP it so well written, I think. I loved that always find what new words mean when I read her books...I felt that alone was worth reading it. And love that young people are actually into them!
Glad you liked the first one!
I love these books. I only read the last 4 of them though :) I saw the first 3 movies before I got into them. And who cares if everyone else reads them! If you like them and they entertain you, that is all that matters.
Yay I must still be "young people" because I love that series.
Kathryn, welcome. You have entered a wonderful, lovely little world.
You're right, Jill. People like them for a reason (they're very well written). And they weren't on all of the best seller lists for no reason.
I was like you at first and refused to read them. Then Jared bribed me and I read them all and loved them. My favorite part about the series is that they all build on each other so well. There may be something you thought was insignificant in Book 1 but actually becomes very significant in the following book or books. Have fun.
Oh, keep reading them! They are so fun and so well written. Each book gets better and better. The first two seem like children's novels, but the last 5 are decidedly more grown up. How lucky that you get to experience HP with fresh eyes! Enjoy.
so fun that you read Harry Potter. I loved these books (some are better than others). They are great because they are so "light and fluffy" and you can kind of get lost in them and be a kid again. Read the other ones...4 is amazing! But don't watch the movies...they ruin the books.
Love Harry Potter. I actually think reading things "everyone else is reading" just makes you more apt to take part in an educated conversation (even if they can be categorized as childrens lit).
JK Rowling is incredible for coming up with these, but I agree with the other person who commented - I'd steer clear of the movies. I wasn't such a fan of those.
Harry Potter is my fav... Read them all. You should read the rest at some point in your life. These books were my escape amidst the textbooks while going to school
