A story about an almost very sad day.

We took a train back into the city last night & felt quite untethered, me carrying only my purse & Mike carrying the heavy camera bag - we were sans luggage since it was only a day trip. I had brought my big camera bag - with everything in it just in case, including lenses, various accessories & my polaroid camera + extra film. Just in case. We had an uneventful train ride. It was crowded, so we put the camera bag overhead. Mike read. I napped. We pulled into Grand Central. We filed out of the crowded train, wandered through the terminal & went down into the subway tunnel, approaching the turnstiles to enter the station. I started going through the mental images of the photos that I took that day, when it suddenly hit me (rather like a ton of bricks).

The camera bag!!!

Mike looked at me & my the single bag (purse) I was carrying, & looked at his empty arms. He didn't say a word, he didn't hesitate. He just turned & sprinted (reason #478 why I love my husband). He was out of view within 3 seconds, disappearing into the crowds.

I tried to follow him, but I really just felt like I was going to throw up. My camera. (Heart pounding) My very new camera. (Heart pounding) Worst possible scenarios were quickly & vividly imagined. (Heart pounding)

Quick ending to the potentially terrible story: I finally found the track that our train had arrived on, just as Mike ran out of the still-there train with a bag in hand. A man next to me cheered. Apparently he'd cheered Mike on through his effort, asking what he was sprinting for & then saying, You can do it!!

We'll call the blame neutral on this one. It doesn't really even matter. We (Mike) found it. Nothing was lost. Catastrophe narrowly avoided. I'm calling my insurance company (finally) tomorrow. It's been on my to-do list for too long.

Phew.

Tonight, I'm happy to have a memory card full of photos & a few polaroids that were just fun, that I can put in a book & flip through. I like the one that Mike took, with me & my favorite possession (in the electronics category, anyway), even if it does weigh too many pounds. And it's okay that these photos are from an instant camera with technology from a decade ago. It's fun to mix things up. I like that polaroids are a throw back to days running around as a little girl in the early 90's. Maybe it's rooted in the fact that I had a friend in elementary school (Annie Crego, actually) who had a polaroid camera & I thought she was so cool. Older, with horses, a treehouse & a polaroid camera. I wanted to be her. I never did get a polaroid. It's fun that I do now, even if it's 20 years later. My parents (& my in-laws) still don't understand the current appeal. That's okay.

PS - Special thanks to Kelsey for the frequent use of her scanner lately. Our very own printer / scanner is in the mail. We're real adults now, the almost-owners of an actual printer (which makes sense since we only bought our first desk 6 months ago, we live in 600 square feet, & have never owned a car as a married couple).

Um...yes, that has happened to me. Left camera bag in rental car in Baltimore, flew home to California. Realized it was missing somewhere over Kansas? Almo came through for me. We must be doing something right :)

Cute skirt.

The only way I didn't throw up for you was your title made me have hope. That would have been terrible.

Glad you got it.

Kathryn,
How ironic that I find your blog, and the first entry I read is about my family!! You and Mike make a great couple, and I am quite impressed by your photography skills!! I heard Joanna is engaged, Yea!! How in the world do I get a note to her?? Anyways, glad that you are doing well, and I will check in on your blog more often!!
Love and Hugs,
Nici (Crego) Roberts

yes, thank you for your title that left me with a little hope! I was feeling sick for you! my friend here left her bag in a taxi in PARIS! she is way professional and left some very expensive equipment...I felt sick for her. So glad it turned out happy. And you look so pretty!

Nici, what?! Oh my gosh! You need to leave me your email address (& blog address??)!

(I still have a polaroid that Annie took of me when I was probably 6 years old - she had dressed me up in a wig & giant white sunglasses. Too funny.)

Wow. I nearly had a heart attack just reading this. YAY, Mike!!! I'm so glad that this story had a happy ending. Now Oscar's story- that one just about kills me. Here's to hoping that that one will have a happy ending as well.

I think I may be able to almost match that story. When we were first married, we had a flight out of Newark, and John forgot his work briefcase with work papers and his employer-issued laptop on the train (containing tons of sensitive financial information about a very private hedge fund client). We did not realize this until the train had already left the station, after which it goes through, as the NJTransit employee put it, some very "rough neighborhoods." He basically told us to say goodbye to the thing. Miraculously, though, they found it when the train reached its destination, someone put it on a train going back the other way, we picked it up on the platform, and we still made our flight. And yet John still mocks me when I want to leave early for the airport. Truly, it was a miracle.

Yes, I have decided that we will not be real adults (despite having a child, having bought, renovated, and perhaps sold our first home, etc) until we own (1) a washer/dryer, (2) a garbage disposal, and (3) a car.

no. no. no. this did not happen. I would have flipped! i'm SO glad Mike is a fast runner and that you found it. WOW. maybe you need to look into placing a tracking device in your camera?

*good to see you today.

Wow...it was strange to drop you off at the train without the usual bags and suitcase stuffed with Costco products, so I can see how you could have momentarily forgotten...SO GLAD you realized in time and could get it back!
GREAT PICTURES of an amazing day! I'm still glowing from the beautiful light and colors...you just couldn't take it all in. Your beautiful pictures help preserve it all. Jeanne
