NYC is full of warm fuzzies.

People smiled at me on my way home tonight. This was not normal. It was amazing. Well- people meaning three people total. But that's three more than I think I've ever gotten. The three smiles came from:
  1. The man who is always screaming & yelling about Jesus at 125th Street. He smiled as I walked down the stairs into the subway station- he smiled at me. It was a warm, genuine I recognize you smile. One of these days I'm going to talk to him & tell him that I wholeheartedly agree with his message- I just question his choice of delivery.
  2. A man on the subway. I recognized him from Metro North {the train}. He's a little older than I am, must work in Greenwich, & is oftentimes on my morning & evening train. I don't think we'll ever be buddies, but it's nice to be recognized in NYC. It's a place where one can easily feel quite anonymous.
  3. An old woman on the bus. As I was walking toward an empty seat on which to sit, a man near by starting crazily waving his arms {I think he had personal-space issues}. I must have rolled my eyes & given a not another crazy person look, but the woman on the other side laughed & gave me a knowing smile. He did the same thing to several people who got within 4 feet him. He must have a tough time in the city.

Anyway- today was nothing momentous, but it was a good reminder that I need to be more human. I need to smile more, especially to strangers. There are oftentimes days {especially recently} where I walk too quickly, I'm far too impatient, & I'm always rushed. I need to slow down, take more deep breaths, & simply smile. It really does make a difference.

It DOES make a difference. Your smile, your consideration, your genuine care, all shine through, and can greatly impact those with whom you share life's journey, even if it be for only a moment.. Add compliment or a kind word, and you've got a real winner. We can never tell what happened in a persons life during a day, but we can always interject a little joy or compassion. What a fun project it would be to live in New York and to see how many days we could brighten.............
