Can someone please tell me how to decide on a digital SLR? It's time for an upgrade from my point & shoot {which I love, by the way, & is always in my purse}. The Hudson family seems to be enamored with the Rebel XTi, but I want to make a really good, informed decision. Please teach me. I know I have quite a few photog friends out there.

Oh I want to know too. I know nothing as of right now!
This is such a great post - I would love a more advanced camera too & now I can poach off of the advice you get!
All I will say is that we have been using our little pocket sized camera ALL the time recently. We love our rebel and ALL our friends around here now have it but its nice to have a travel sized one too.
I have a Canon rebel and LOVE it, however, this Christmas I was hoping for a new camera and was researching both the Canon 40D and the Canon 5D. Here is a link that compares the two

You can get the body of the 40D if you find the right web site (a lot of them ship from NYC) for $500 and up and you can get the body of the 5D for $1000 and up. I didn't get a camera for Christmas so I might hold out for a newer release of the 5D but that may be more than a year. Hope that gave you some insight (on the canon at least)
I am actually a Nikon gal. The D80 is great. I think Nikon has historically made a fantastic camera, but I hear the Rebel is pretty great these days...
Go to B&H Photo on 9th and 34th, they are VERY informed, and can tell you a lot about which camera you should get for your specific needs.
Couple of quick tips from me:
1. Don't buy from those super discount e-tailers, B&H or Amazon are you best bet online and check anyone else on resellerratings.com. Most of the Brooklyn outfits are huge scams and horror stories can be found by the bushel.
2. Canon and Nikon both make good cameras. They are pretty comparable with Canon have a little higher image quality per dollar and Nikon having better controls/handling. Pentax has some really loyal customers also.
3. Don't fool yourself into thinking that the body will be your biggest purchase. If you get into this you will spend way more on lenses.
4. Whatever you get have lots of fun and let us know.
