I'm sorry, but with genocide, a terrible war in Iraq & other tragic or otherwise globally significant events taking place every day, why is The Today Show dedicating 15 minutes in the morning to discuss Britney Spears? I think it's gross.

She doesn't really stand a chance, does she? Chased, cornered, manipulated and otherwise exploited, she lost her childhood and her ability to live a normal life long ago. It's only a matter of time before she meets a tragic end, I think. Why doesn't Today spend 15 minutes on something that is happy, uplifting, ennobling or otherwise positive?

I agree with your mom. I'm sad that it seriously seems like a tragic end is the only thing. But, you are right - there are a TON more things going on right now than Brit-pop.
