Hair.

I went & got my hair done last night (darker, less red + more brown). As soon as I walked in, Bradley said, Oh, we need to get you out of that shirt & into a smock. That looks expensive. Thank you Kera, for helping me pick out a darling $23 shirt at Forever 21 (that was slightly out of my comfort zone in terms of style/fabric) when I was in San Francisco with you. I wore it yesterday & got about 37 compliments on it. I think people were just shocked that it wasn't black & was a little fancy & chic. I was talking on the phone with Tara before I went into the salon & we were discussing our problems with black. I asked her if wearing a champagne top + black pants & shoes counted as "branching out". She said no. I'm trying. .
Oh- & people don't harass me on Canal Street any more (think people speeding through Guchi, Prada, Louis Vuitton, handbags, handbags as you walk by them on the street). I asked Bradley about this, & he said this means that I a) walk too fast & b) look local (probably mean). Good.
.
Speaking of Bradley - we all know that I love him. We laughed throughout my 2+ hour appointment yesterday (ugh), traded stories, & had an all-around good time. I always have so much fun when he does my hair. I love that he's from Spokane & a NYC transplant like me (this means that he has the edge of a New Yorker, while still maintaining the warmth of someone from the Pacific Northwest). I love that I can complain about my recent development of under-eye wrinkles & he'll talk to me about skin care for 25 minutes. It's hilarious that he had me convinced for 15 minutes yesterday that he wears a girdle because the camera adds 10 pounds. He's just funny, but he's really good, too. I'm really proud of him. He's done Petra Nemkova's hair for a couple of years (they were just featured in People) & other various celebrities, but he has still struggled to break out in terms of his freelancing career. He was like a giddy school girl yesterday when he told me that InStyle just hired him to do a full 8-page spread for their fall wedding issue. He was so, so excited. It's the big break he's been dreaming about. He said, Maybe my family will stop giving me a hard time for moving to New York now. Apparently everyone (his old salon, his friends, his family) told him that he'd never make it here, & that he'd come crawling back home after 3 months (sad). Anyway- I'm proud of him. I told him I'd blog about him. Oh- & I also told him that if he raised his prices again & got a big head I'd stop coming to him.
.
He also filled me in on Spokane beauty-parlor drama. Apparently the guy who cuts my hair in Spokane (Chris- works at the salon where Bradley used to work- he did my hair all throughout high school & college + for my wedding - loved him) used to be roommates (not lovers) with Cheyenne Jackson. When Chris wanted to be more-than-friends, he apparently got the cold shoulder from Cheyenne. Next step: vicious, frivolous lawsuit against Cheyenne from Chris. The judge threw it out immediately, & soon after, Chris was slapped with a restraining order against him from Cheyenne. Apparently Chris is quite the Single White Female & has had a few run-ins with Bradley. Yikes. Maybe this is why Chris never really says anything when he's cutting my hair in Spokane & I'm gushing over how great Bradley is & how well he's doing in New York... oops.
.
Oh- & I forgot to mention that Bradley went to high school with Kevin (my brother in law). I'm quite certain that they didn't run in the same social circle, but funny nonetheless. Small world.
.
That's the salon dish for the day. Probably more than anyone cared to know.

Your salon dish! I couldn't even really keep track of who was who in there, but it sounds like a good story. And you get your hair done by the person that is doing an 8 page spread for InStyle? That's huge Kathryn. And way to go for him for being a transplant and making it out there.

Oooo! Fun! It's like reading a soap opera! I think you should go in more often to just get a style :) I'm sure Mike would love that extra slice of your pie chart of expenses! But I want to see a picture of your cute hair now!

That was the most entertaining post I've read on your blog in a long time. It was right up my alley. ;)

I want to see your new shirt and the hair! And such a good thing that you can avoid all the hassel on Canal Street - that IS impressive.

Missy-

Salon Nuveau is a salon in Spokane that I went to for years. Chris cut my hair there, & Bradley worked there too.

When I moved to New York, I called Chris & asked him if he knew anyone here who cut hair. He recommended Bradley, who had moved here about a year prior from Spokane.

Cheyenne Jackson grew up in Spokane, was in "Joseph" with our church, and has since become a Broadway star.

Cheyenne, Chris & Bradley were all a part of the Spokane gay scene, which I'd imagine is quite small. So- they all know each other very well, for a really long time.

Bradley + Cheyenne = still friends. Cheyenne & Bradley = now do not like Chris & think he is scary. Chris = apparently hates everyone he does or has ever worked with.

Funny. :)

Got it. So, Cheyenne is a boy. I was thinking a girl...but why do they suddenly not like Chris? Oh, I see it in your blog. Chris wanted to be more than friends with Cheyenne. Soap opera for sure.
