I tried to make my eyes look like Angelina Jolie the other day. I don't think it worked. {And my eyeballs look huge in this picture, by the way.} Also, regarding eyes- I need to buy some waterproof mascara. I'm going to be at the lake for a week, and while I'll do okay not wearing makeup, I'm not the naturally pretty type who looks normal without mascara {I think I look quite scary, actually}. This being said, I plan on wearing it. Daily. Any favorites? I've been a MAC loyalist ever since I could drive myself to Nordstrom...

Those are your eyes? very pretty. What color shade do you have on? So I go to Lake Powell with my family every year and don't wear an ounce of makeup and it is waaaay scarier than you can imagine- just think, I am a natural blonde. yikes. Anyhow, maybe I should wear at least mascara to save my fam from seeing it but they are used to it by now. Still, let me know what you end us using.
Heidi, you are just about the most naturally beautiful person I've ever seen. If I didn't *know* you then I would probably hate you. :) I don't have flawless skin, so I have a tough time going "nude", but the thought of makeup at the lake is just sort of gross. I envy my friends that use bronzer and go! Not me.
The color I'm wearing is new... I got it at Sephora when my mom was here a month or so ago because it looked SO pretty on my hand (that's where you test eye shadow against your skin tone)-It's by The Balm (I had never heard of it before I got it), and the color is "Luscious Lani". :) MAC has a shade called "Naked Lunch" that is comparable, and my overall favorite from MAC. I only used that, and lined the top of my eyes (trying to look like AJ, who I think always has the most gorgeous, classic looking makeup- and it's always very minimal).
What kind of eyeliner are you wearing? I actually really like eyeliner, and I use the MAC espresso color with a liner pencil. But, it doesn't always give the greatest thin line. Do you know what I mean?
I like your shadow too. I rarely wear shadow, but I think it is fun in light colors. I don't think I look good with lots of dark shadows. My friend Jill can wear all sorts of colors and have it look GOOD. Not me.
My Avery kinda has your color eyes. Greenish/bluish with brown at the center. Do you say hazel?
The picture is sort of funny- I think the left eye (MY right eye) looks green, and the other looks blue. Odd lighting. I say green. They are green most of the time- but sometimes more blue. Depends on the lighting/what I'm wearing. Hmm.
Missy, do you use the espresso shadow with a liner brush? Is that what you mean? I like that color (espresso, from MAC). If you are doing this (using a shadow color as a liner, and using their sharp angled brush), you can get it wet before you get the color on it- it helps create a nice sharp line with rich color. I've tried Bobbi Brown's eye liner pots (it literally looks like an ink pot, and you dip a sharp brush in it), but I think that it is too technical for me. :) It always looks great when THEY do it, but not so much on my own.
For something quick, I like MAC's waterproof liners (nice and sharp). Otherwise, I use my angled brush, with water, and my dark shadows.
Oh- and I can't really do dark shadows either, unless I'm doing something fancy (and then I generally have someone ELSE do it for me!). I have a bazillion shades of brown/light pinks/nudes. If you have a really neutral color on your lids, and line your eyes (especially UNDER your top lashes- scary, but looks great), it's an easy "finished" look.
Okay- far too much discussion. Sorry.
Love the eyes and the discussion. I never learned how to do my eye make-up. My younger sister is amazing at it. I've always been jealous. However, I love not having to worry about my eye make-up smearing right down to my nostrils. That's the plus of not wearing a lot of make-up.
I'm a lip gloss girl.
I think the eye picture is really cool. I would say that they're hazel. But I do remember that you have camo eyes like me (change with what you're wearing). very pretty!
I say go makeupless at the lake. Just use an eye lash curler (maybe some colorless eye lash gel that will help give them shape and make them a little darker) and some lip gloss. That would be a lot more comfortable...wouldn't it? Sorry- no tips here on waterproof mascara. I love any opportunity to do the bronzer and gloss without the shadows, blushes and mascara. (mascara is my least favorite of all the makeups).
Missy- I love MACs angled eye liner brush. I just use a copper colored shadow (lancome, MAC or Origins) with the thin, angled brush and ta-da! Easy application liner that's a lost less "woah!".
By the way: I've always done the Lancome mascara. Then I fell in love with Costco's 2 pack of mascara (it doesn't last long!) and finally found Boots mascara at Target and love it. It's still $10 but great.
{maybe world's longest comment??}
Let's keep the long comments going, shall we? I do have the MAC angled brush and I will get it wet. Have I been missing the boat by NOT wetting it? If I recall the lady told me I could do either, but maybe by not having it wet I don't always get that precise line that I'm looking for? I'll try it tomorrow. I think that's usually when I wear eyeliner anyway. Kathryn, how do you do eyeliner under the top eyelashes?
I got so consumed by the eyeliner that I forgot to talk about waterproof mascara. I don't have any grand suggestions for waterproof mascara, but I'm a mascara only type somedays and don't think it would be difficult to do only mascara at the lake. You hate mascara Kelli? Granted, it isn't fun to put on, I will admit that. I'm glad you like the Boots mascara. I'm using Origins right now, but maybe I'll try the Boots. I'm always on the lookout for a good mascara. Does that come in waterproof? Maybe you should try that one Kathryn.
I'm still at a loss for a wonderful, wonderful gloss that doesn't make my lips sticky. Can we open up discussion on that one? Maybe a whole new post Kathryn? I love the stuff. My absolute favorite is...oh jeez, I forgot the name and can't find it (green tube w/black top - Kelli you LOVE this stuff too), but I feel like I need more. Any others? Who said they liked MAC's? Kathryn, are you wearing gloss or lipSTICK in the lamb review post photo of you and Mike? I like the color you are wearing there.
Too long? I could've gone longer probably.
Okay- #1, I am "cursed" with having naturally beautiful friends. Not fair! I have blotchy skin, dark circles under my eyes, and a less-than-perfect complexion that often times needs to be concealed. Oh- and thanks to long hours at work, I am PALE. So for all of you flawless beauties- I'm jealous that you can get away with bronzer and lipgloss. I can't look decent with that little "help". :)
Missy- the wet angled brush is a great trick. I think it's the only way to do the shadow-as-eyeliner thing, I think. The color might be too dark, depending on the shadow, but give it a shot. It will give you a nice, crisp line (try just using it in the upper and lower corners (outer) of your eyes) The under the lash thing is hard to articulate, but is a favorite MAC artist tip I've picked up (from a guy in Portland, OR of all places). Basically, using a pencil (the angled brush wouldn't work as well I don't think), line your eye UNDER the lash (thing the exact opposite side of where you normally would). It's a little close to the eyeball, but line the eye right where the lashes are attached to your skin, on the underside (there is a little "ridge" so to speak). It gives you a lot of definition without looking like you are wearing ANY makeup, and you won't go blind, promise. It's a good trick. Did that make any sense? I'll try a different approach if it didn't.
If I could only have 1 item of makeup, it would be mascara. It makes such a big difference on me. I still haven't found my favorite brand... I really like Zoom Lash by MAC (only $9), and they might make it in waterproof... I'll check. I haven't tried the Lancome, but have always heard good things. I tried Origins for a while (on Kelli's recommendation a few years ago I think?) and it didn't do enough for me. Most drug store brands have not proved to be satisfactory, but I don't necessarily want to spend $25 on mascara. Hmm. Tricky. I'll do some research and let you know. :)
And Missy- I think you're talking about the CO Bigelow stuff (not sticky, but tinted, and has a mint flavor?). I've used it and like it, but it doesn't have the staying power I like. For lipgloss, I always go with MAC (super sticky though- but lasts forever) or Stila. Last night (in the picture) I was wearing Plum by Stila (and I think lip liner by MAC in plum, for some extra color). It's one of my favorite lip glosses (the others being Vanilla and Apricot, at the moment). Stila isn't super sticky, and they have great colors. It's a bit pricey though ($22 I think). MAC is more reasonable (around $14). Oh- I used to use Lancome Juicy Tubes, too. A favorite when I was at BYU. Not sticky, either, and around the same price ($14). I could definitely do an entire post on lip gloss. Hmm.
Oh- and I haven't tried Boots, but don't have a Target in the city. Maybe I'll try it the next time I make it out to CT.
Someone... please... make... it... stop...
Mike, which color eye shadow do you like best on Kathryn? And do you have a preference for her lakeside makeup? Do these comments come to your email? Hopefully not.
Ok, I of all people should not be wearing only mascara. I need way more than that, but seem to fall short in the knowledge department of make up. Do more posts like this Kathryn and I'll be sure to catch up quick:)
I'm totally trying the wet brush (not the inside of the lashes) tomorrow.
I LOVE Lancome mascara. It's been my very favorite forever. My eyelashes look so long with it. I should probably get it again, but went with Origins and have found that my lashes aren't as long with it even with the mascara under stuff I bought. Have you heard of that? Regardless, I'll have to try Boots if Kelli thinks it's comparable to Lancome. Believe it or not I really like the pink and green kind from the drugstore (can't remember the name, Maybelline? Only problem is that I go through it super quick so I'd rather buy something else and actually save money + have long lashes).
Thanks for your lip gloss suggestions. Yes, I meant the Bigelow stuff. Love it. I think I might be checking the Lancome stuff out (along with the mascara) next time I'm at the mall. Summer color suggestions? I have the Stila Apricot (from Jen!) which I DO really like. Pricey yes, but sometimes...maybe it's worth it if I'm only going mascara and lip gloss?
PS:? Can we all get together in SF during your marathon Kathryn? Wouldn't it be fun to share a hotel room and talk this nitty gritty stuff out?
No preference whatsoever. Past a certain point, girls dress up for other girls, because guys can't see the difference.
Missy, the comments only go to my email. :) I'm working on my talk (in bed) and my blackberry is right next to me (bad habit), so when the little red light starts flashing, I check. May as well keep the dialogue going, right?
The pink stuff (Maybelline Great Lash, I think?) is consistently voted the #1 mascara... I've been doing research for the last 15 minutes (in lieu of doing my talk on Prayer) on ivillage and what not. Maybe I'll try that? My next regular-mascara purchase will be Lancome, I think. I still love my Zoom Lash though, and you can't beat the price (and their recycling program).
Missy- are you for sure going to be in SF? Fun! We will definitely have to discuss a game plan for
f-u-n.
I'm in for f-u-n. Yes please.
Mascara- my guidelines are thin (I hate thick and flakey or gooey) that makes the lashes look longer. If you're looking for volume, maybe you won't like the Boots stuff so much. But I definitely like the Lancome mascara. (I actually wasn't a huge fan of Origins mascara either. I liked how it smelled and that I was putting "natural" so close to my eyes, but it didn't seem to last long and it got flakey after a while.)
Lip Gloss- I love the C.O. Bigelow stuff. For the every day quick apply constantly type. But I think Juicy Tubes (Lancome) is my favorite "last a little longer" gloss. I've tried Origins and Aveda and The Balm and some Bath and Body works brand. Maybe I'm not too picky. I don't "dress up" much. (I never get out. If I do...it's to the park or bakery. You know. Nobody to impress realy.)
And for the reccord, I'm definitely not the natural beauty type. I just like the feeling of going light on the makeup. :)
Do you turn off the red flashing light after a certain time?? I hope so! If not...sorry!!
Kelli- can you come to SF?! I hope so. Oh boy, this could be so much fun. AND, Miss K- you ARE amongst the natural beauties of which I was referring. I've seen your glowing skin and pretty eyes- without makeup!
And Missy- I haven't used Juicy Tubes in a while. Maybe Kelli can help here? I've used their pinkish colors- sheer, but with pink tint. Creamsicle? Yup- that was it. Don't know if they still make it, but that was a favorite.
And I really love Stila Vanilla. It's a great color (especially with tan skin).
I'm going to bed (with dreams of cosmetic counters...)!
I'll keep it short--
Stila lip gloss is the best. I like watermelon and apricot best.
I used to use Lancome mascara, but now I'm a poor homeowner and so I had to cut back. I now use (when I actually get dressed up) Maybelline. It's ok. I'm not sure what's so great about it or why it wins so many of lose lame awards.
Anyway...this is fun.
The funny thing is, I thought that this was a "sleeper" post. Fun!
Oh- and I forgot to mention- I've tried The Body Shop's mascara, too. It's not too shabby, if only a little clumpy.
And I've never tried the Watermelon Stila, Jen. I'll have to give that a shot.
And OH- I just got an email from Sephora that says, "Lipstick is in". Hmm.
Okay, here's my two cents....or three or four.
I grew up on pink Maybelline mascara. After I started using MAC finally one day I was exposed to the glory of Zoom Lash and I've never gone back, I don't see the hype with Maybelline.
I hate water proof but my highly knowledgable makeup/MAC savy friend SWEARS by Loud Lash by MAC, so that's my recommendation.
For eyeliner, I also swear by Blacktrack Fluidline by MAC. It's in the little pot. It's gel. I bought it when it was only released in the smaller boutique-like Nordstrom stores, and have been in love ever since. (There's tons of colors, but when I first bought it they only had blacktrack. I'm a black only liner kind of girl anyways.) I apply it with the angled brush. I can't wait to try the application below my upper lashes!
Hope that helps!!
Oh my this was hilarious! I learned a lot. I too do the wet angled brush for eyeliner but I only wear it on the weekends, at work I don't really care. Oh and I definitely need to try
And Kathryn- I do not have good skin at all and for sure should wear foundation, etc, but just am too lazy. I used to be on accutane, if that gives you any indication of my non good skin. It has improved in the past few years though.
So, the pink and green tube isn't really worth the hype. Like I said, whenever I use I go through it really fast and feel that it dries out quickly. I think I might try MAC, for reals this time. Loud Lash or Zoom Lash? Just tell me which one makes the lashes seem longer. I love long lashes. Or else I'll just stick to Lancome. I do love that stuff.
As for eyeliner, I tried it today with the wet brush, but still didn't have that super precise line. Maybe it's my application of it? How many times do you get the brush wet?
What makes blacktrack fluidline so great Rae? Maybe I should try that? I really only wear it on the weekends too, but I like the look eyeliner gives.
I hate my skin. I would have thought when I was 16 that in ten years I wouldn't be breaking out anymore, but I do. Aargh.
PS: I'm totally in for f-u-n. Maybe I can fly up and visit Jen and then we can all meet. Heidi isn't far from SF either. Rae? Where are you?
Missy, Zoom Lash is "regular" mascara (aka not waterproof). I've used several tubes over the last few years, and always love it (plus the price is great). Loud Lash is waterproof, right Rae?
I'm sorry the wet brush thing didn't work. I always get it wet (under the faucet), blot it on toilet paper, then voila. We'll have to do this in person. :)
Yup. I break out just about as much now as I did as a teenager. I haven't gone to the extreme of acutane (it makes me nervous) but I've tried just about everything else. Sigh.
And SF- I love your idea, Missy. Definitely fly up. And Rae is in NYC with me, although we haven't *met* yet. Got to love blogging. :)
And Missy- did you give the under-lash lining a try?
SF it is!
I didn't try the under lash lining thing with the angled brush. But, I didn't only do the edges like you told me too. Next time I'll do that. Maybe even tomorrow...
Don't use the angled brush, Missy- use an eyeliner pencil (under the lashes). I don't think that the angled brush would work. Let me know how it goes. :)
O I meant to write earlier that I need to try the under lash lining- what kind of eyeliner do you use for that?
When is the SF weekend?
MAC- PowerPOint eye pencil. I like dark brown the best, but sometimes use black.
I am running the SF half marathon in October (on the 21).
How fun would that be, to all get together?
I'm not really trying to keep this make up post going forever, but I think my questions fit better here than the lamb post.
Did you use the powerpoint pencil in this photo? I'm going to buy that. It sounds precise. I want precise.
Also, what do you put under your eyes? I don't see any black circles that you claim to have.
Yup Missy. Its good stuff. It isn't smudge-able because it is waterproof. Their regular liner (can't remember the name) is good too, but I find that it melts sometimes, and melting is not good. I really just love MAC products overall, and if you don't like something, you can always take it back.
Under my eyes... MAC concealer some days (when I'm feeling especially not pretty or rested), but normally just foundation, as gross as I think foundation is. I use MAC's Mineralize Satin Finish. It is dewey, and not too heavy. I just got their really, really light foundation too- more of a tinted moisturizer. I haven't used it yet, so I can't comment on it quite yet.
Oh and Missy- if yo buy the liner, ask them to show you how to do the under-lash thing. :)
I love this....open makeup forum!!
So there's so much I felt like I wanted to comment back on...
Missy- in regards to the blacktrack fluidline...I'm not sure why I like it so much. When I first started using eyeliner I used a pencil, then I moved to the angled brush with black eyeshadow, and then was converted to the fluidline. It's not too dramatic, but also not subtle; if that's what you're going for I'd suggest the eyeshadow for eyeliner. I think I just like it's got the look of liquid liner, but not as dramatic, and it doesn't smudge.
Kathryn-yes, Loud Lash is waterproof. I'm so glad you posted about using the pencil under your eyelashes.....I totally tried it with the angled brush this weekend, hahaha. It was nearly impossible and I thought, "Wow, Kathryn must be a pro at this." But I did like the final result. :)
In regards to skin, mine was great growing up, now I'm in my mid-20s and it decides to have problems??? What the heck....
Wow. Fun post/comments. I just had to say that "Luscious Lani" from the Balm is named after my cousin Lani, who works there!! Fun that you like it.
No way Lindsey! That is awesome. I think it is my favorite color (maybe only 2nd to MAC's Naked Lunch). fun. :)
I love MAC too and totally do the eyeliner trick with the shadow and angled brush. I use Carbon eye shadow. I'm a fan.
Love that you use (and love the balm). Lani gives me lots of products whenever I see her. Luscious Lani was in my last bag of the balm!
Lindsey- I'm jealous. Enough said.
So First of all I think I would feel left out if I didnt post. second I read about half the comments and gave up and third what is this NATURALLY PRETTY Crap.. You look beautiful all the time..
I bought the MAC Loud Lash last night @ Bendel's. I used it this morning (Just for fun, and because it is going to be 95 degrees and HUMID today), and I love it. Missy- it is defintiely "lengthening"- not clumpy at all.
I'm satisfied. Next- the water test!
