Cooking.

Dear Mom:
.
Yesterday was a perfect example of why I rarely cook these days:

Caught a 6pm train home from Greenwich (this is an "early" night). Made it to Harlem by 6:33. Made it to 86th Street by 6:55. Walked in the sweltering 95+ degree heat to the grocery store on 86th & 2nd Ave. Spent 20 minutes grocery shopping for items needed for dinner, which I was committed to finally making (in lieu of the recently typical routine of one of the following: eating out, ordering take out, cereal, quesadillas, or a protein bar). Grocery tab for one meal, for two people (a simple pasta salad, yummy as it is): $37.

Waited 5 minutes to catch the bus in lieu of walking the 8 blocks home to avoid profuse sweating. Arrived home around 7:45. Quickly consumed as much water as I possibly could. Turned on AC in apartment so as not to boil. Spent half an hour preparing dinner. Finally ate around 8:45pm.

Some (most) days, it's just not worth it.

I think your time is too valuable to cook during the week. You live in a place where you can eat for almost nothing, and someone else has to clean up after you. If you feel guilty, throw the food in a pan, stir it around, and then dish it up. But that's just my opinion.

IF you ever feel you need to cook During the week...especially when it is crazy hot and humid...just remember your Mom said....Don't do it!
I love the COSTCO chicken which is already cooked and comes in strips(Tara introduced it to me) If you wanted something uber easy you could do a chicken salad or burritos without much fuss. You need a fifteen minutes or less cookbook from which you pull some basic recipes. That way you could keep stuff in the pantry and freezer and zip something together quick 'n' easy if you felt the urge.

Or... you could pick up the phone, on the way home from work, and have it delivered as you walk in the door! But I do love the chicken strips.

I don't have Costco, unless I take a 45 minute train ride to CT, and then haul everything back in. Or- I can buy a car. And pay hundreds of dollars a month just to park it. Sigh.

isn't that the truth!

You at least have good excuses. Try telling your parents that they dropped some major coin on uber-fancy culinary school, and now you never cook. Yes folks, I eat pasta, cereal, or tacos just about every night.
